ROMEL General Trading PLC is a diversified Ethiopian enterprise with over 21 years of operation. Our Electrical Equipment Division manufactures, imports and distributes commercial and decorative lighting, wiring devices, circuit protection products and enclosures for the residential and commercial building market. We are now establishing a new Industrial Electrical Products Division , engaged in the import, assembly and supply of LV Switchgear (Low Voltage Switchgear and Controlgear Assemblies) — including Main Switchboards (MSB) , Main Distribution Boards (MDB) , sub-main and final distribution boards — together with the switching, protection, measuring and connection components used within them. We invite applications from qualified professionals for the following position. Reports to CEO Place of Work Addis Ababa, Required No. 1 (One) Terms Permanent, after probation PURPOSE OF THE ROLE To build the Industrial Electrical Products Division from inception to a self-sustaining, profitable business unit — defining the product portfolio, developing the supplier base, establishing the assembly workshop and its technical standards, building the customer channel, and recruiting and developing the team — with full accountability for divisional revenue, gross margin and technical integrity. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Business establishment and management ▪ Develop the divisional business plan, budget, organisational structure and staffing plan, and secure management approval ▪ Carry full accountability for divisional revenue, gross margin, inventory turnover and working capital performance ▪ Establish operating procedures, quality standards and management reporting for the division Product and supplier development ▪ Define the assembly portfolio : Main Switchboards (MSB), Main Distribution Boards (MDB), Sub-Main Distribution Boards (SMDB), final distribution boards, Motor Control Centres (MCC), automatic transfer switch panels, power factor correction panels, feeder pillars and metering panels ▪ Define the component portfolio to be imported and stocked: Air Circuit Breakers (ACB), Moulded Case Circuit Breakers (MCCB), Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCB), RCCB/RCBO, switch-disconnectors and changeover switches, HRC fuses and bases, contactors and thermal overload relays, busbar systems and connections, current transformers, energy and panel meters, pilot lights, push buttons, terminal blocks, cable glands, wiring duct and enclosure hardware ▪ Identify, technically qualify and negotiate with international manufacturers and OEMs; evaluate competing suppliers on certification, rating, price and support, and manage supply agreements and warranty terms ▪ Manage the import cycle with Finance and Logistics: proforma review, letter of credit documentation, shipment follow-up, customs clearance and landed-cost control Assembly and technical capability ▪ Establish the panel assembly workshop: layout, tooling, jigs, wiring standards, testing equipment and workshop staffing ▪ Ensure all assemblies are designed and verified to the applicable standard — IEC 61439-1 (general rules), IEC 61439-2 for power switchgear and controlgear assemblies such as MSBs, MDBs and MCCs, and IEC 61439-3 for distribution boards operated by ordinary persons — including design verification, routine testing and documentation ▪ Obtain, evaluate and correctly apply type test and design verification documentation from cabinet and component suppliers, and determine what ROMEL may legitimately claim for its own assemblies on that basis ▪ Personally design and review switchboards and distribution boards: single-line diagrams, general arrangement and internal layout drawings, wiring schematics, protection coordination and discrimination studies, short-circuit and busbar calculations, cable sizing, and selection of IP rating and form of separation ▪ Prepare complete bills of quantities (BOQ) for each board and installation, itemising every component, busbar section, cable, gland, terminal and fastener, and translate these into accurate costings, material requisitions and production orders ▪ Guide site installation, termination, commissioning and configuration of delivered boards, and provide technical direction to installation teams and client contractors ▪ Maintain full technical documentation, test certificates, as-built drawings and O&M manuals for every assembly supplied Market development and sales ▪ Develop the customer base among electrical contractors, industrial park tenants, factories, real estate developers, commercial building owners and institutional clients ▪ Engage consulting engineers and designers to have ROMEL assemblies specified and approved at design stage, and secure listing on approved vendor lists ▪ Lead technical and commercial responses to tenders, including bid preparation, technical compliance statements and post-tender clarification ▪ Establish after-sales service, spare parts availability and technical support for delivered installations Team leadership ▪ Recruit, train and supervise design engineers, panel wiring technicians, testing personnel and technical sales staff ▪ Build internal technical competence through structured training, including supplier-delivered training abroad where applicable REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE Education ▪ BSc in Electrical Engineering (Power / Electrical Power Systems stream). MSc in a related field or an MBA is an advantage. Experience ▪ Minimum ten (10) years of relevant professional experience, of which at least four (4) years in a managerial or divisional leadership capacity ▪ Demonstrated hands-on experience in LV switchgear and controlgear assembly (panel building) , obtained with a licensed panel builder, an OEM authorised assembler, a major electrical contractor, a utility, or an industrial plant's electrical maintenance function ▪ Direct experience in the design, build, testing or commissioning of Main Distribution Boards and main switchboards at fault levels typical of commercial and industrial installations ▪ Proven track record of establishing or substantially growing a technical product line or business unit ; candidates who have only managed an established operation should be prepared to demonstrate equivalent build-from-scratch capability ▪ Practical experience in international sourcing and import operations, including LC-based transactions and Ethiopian customs procedures, is strongly preferred Technical competencies ▪ Demonstrated design capability — the successful candidate must be able to produce switchboard and installation designs personally, not merely supervise others. Practical command of AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN or equivalent, together with manufacturer configuration and selection software (e.g. ABB DOC, Schneider Ecodial, Caneco, ETAP), is required. ▪ Command of the IEC 61439 series (Parts 1, 2 and 3) , the IEC 60947 series governing LV switchgear devices, IEC 60364 and the Ethiopian Electrical Installation Code ▪ Experience in obtaining, interpreting and referencing type test and design verification documentation for switchgear assemblies and cabinet systems ▪ Depth of product knowledge — detailed working familiarity with the specifications, ratings, selection criteria and relative merits of switchgear and protection components across major manufacturers, including the ability to assess non-premium brands objectively on certification and performance ▪ Proven ability to quantify and estimate : to take off a complete, accurate BOQ from a design and price it reliably ▪ Proficiency in ERP or inventory management systems ▪ Familiarity with public and donor-funded tender processes, and with EEU / EEP prequalification requirements, is an advantage Professional and personal attributes ▪ Professional competency licence from the relevant Ethiopian regulatory authority is an advantage ▪ Commercial judgement: able to price work, protect margin and negotiate with both suppliers and customers ▪ Full written and spoken proficiency in English and Amharic ▪ Willingness to travel internationally for supplier development and factory acceptance testing Shortlisted candidates will be required to complete a practical design and estimation exercise.
