Job Description

Position: Lawyer Location: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia Number Required: 2 Compensation: As per company scale Job Summary Tigat Saving and Credit Cooperative is seeking experienced and highly motivated Lawyers to provide comprehensive legal counsel, safeguard institutional interests, and ensure full compliance with cooperative and financial regulations. The role involves representing the cooperative in legal proceedings, managing risks, and advising executive leadership on critical legal matters. Key Responsibilities Represent the cooperative before Ethiopian courts, administrative tribunals, and arbitration panels; prepare pleadings, appeals, and defense statements, and manage litigation processes. Lead negotiations, mediations, and arbitrations for financial disputes, loan recoveries, and contractual disagreements. Identify and mitigate legal, operational, and financial risks; establish safeguards for asset protection and debt recovery. Draft, review, and enforce financial contracts, loan agreements, security deeds, and corporate transactions. Monitor changes in banking, financial, commercial, and cooperative laws to ensure compliance and alignment with institutional policies. Provide legal counsel to executive management and the Board of Directors on high-stakes transactions and organizational protection. Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LLB) from a recognized university (LLM in Business, Commercial, or Financial Law is an advantage). Minimum of 4 years of relevant professional experience as a Lawyer, Legal Officer, or Advocate. Prior experience in financial institutions, SACCOs, microfinance, or banking is highly preferred. Core Competencies & Skills Strong expertise in Ethiopian Commercial Law, Contract Law, Financial/Banking Regulations, and Cooperative Frameworks. Excellent legal research, drafting, analytical, and negotiation skills. Proven track record in litigation, dispute resolution, and regulatory compliance. High integrity, professional ethics, and sound judgment. Active attorney license to practice law before Ethiopian courts (mandatory). Ability to work independently under pressure and collaborate effectively within a team.
