Job Description
The
Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Specialist
is responsible for implementing, monitoring, and continuously improving health, safety, and environmental programs for MAXAM's explosives and blasting operations at the Allied Gold mine site (Kurmuk). The position ensures compliance with company standards, client requirements, and applicable legal and regulatory obligations related to the transportation, storage, handling, and use of explosives. The incumbent serves as the primary HSE focal point between MAXAM and Allied Gold, promoting a strong safety culture, managing operational risks, supporting environmental compliance, and ensuring the safe and efficient execution of blasting activities.
Key Responsibilities
Implement and monitor MAXAM's Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) management systems at the Allied Gold project site.
Ensure compliance with company policies, client (Allied Gold) requirements, and applicable legal and regulatory standards governing explosives and blasting operations.
Conduct HSE inspections, audits, hazard identification, and risk assessments for explosives storage, transportation, charging, and blasting activities.
Monitor and promote safe work practices, including adherence to permit-to-work systems, PPE requirements, and critical safety controls.
Investigate incidents, near misses, environmental events, and blasting-related occurrences, and ensure timely implementation of corrective actions.
Coordinate and deliver HSE inductions, training programs, toolbox talks, and safety awareness initiatives for employees and contractors.
Monitor environmental aspects of blasting operations, including vibration, air overpressure, dust, noise, and fly rock, and ensure compliance with environmental requirements.
Support emergency preparedness and response activities related to explosives, blasting operations, transport incidents, fires, and other site emergencies.
Serve as the primary HSE liaison between MAXAM and Allied Gold, participating in client meetings, inspections, audits, and performance reviews.
Prepare and maintain HSE reports, records, statistics, and compliance documentation, ensuring accurate and timely reporting.
Promote continuous improvement and a proactive safety culture to achieve operational excellence and zero-harm objectives.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Education
Bachelor's Degree in one of the following: Occupational Health and Safety Environmental Health, Environmental Science, Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Chemical Engineering Related discipline
Experience Required
Minimum 5 years of HSE experience in mining, explosives, construction, heavy industry or related sectors.
Minimum 3 years of direct experience in explosives, blasting or mining contractor operations.
Experience working under a contractor-client operating model.
Experience interfacing with mine owner HSE teams.
Experience in ISOs9001, 14001, 45001.
Not required but is a plus if you have this certificates:
-NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC)
-NEBOSH Diploma (often preferred for H&S Manager roles)
-ISO 45001 Lead Auditor or Lead Implementer
-IOSH Managing Safely (more often for supervisors than managers)
-Mine rescue, emergency response, or first-aid qualifications relevant to the operation
Preferred
Open-pit mining experience.
Experience with MMU operations and bulk explosive systems.
Experience supporting large-scale gold mining operations.
