Role Description The Deputy Matron is a full-time, on-site leadership role based at KADISCO General Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The role involves supporting the Matron in overseeing nursing services, ensuring the consistent delivery of safe and high-quality patient care across all units. Day-to-day tasks include supervising nursing staff, coordinating duty rosters, monitoring adherence to clinical protocols and infection prevention standards, and promoting effective communication among multidisciplinary teams. The Deputy Matron participates in mentoring and coaching staff, identifying training needs, and supporting orientation for new team members. Additional responsibilities include assisting in quality improvement initiatives, contributing to policy development and implementation, managing resources efficiently, and supporting incident reporting and resolution to maintain regulatory and hospital standards. Qualifications Strong clinical nursing background, with experience in inpatient and outpatient care, and a solid understanding of nursing standards and protocols. Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills, including team coordination, performance management, and staff mentoring. Proficiency in organizing workflows, managing schedules, and ensuring effective utilization of nursing and support staff. Ability to uphold and promote patient safety, infection prevention and control measures, and quality improvement practices. Effective communication and interpersonal skills for working collaboratively with nurses, physicians, administrators, patients, and families. Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and conflict-resolution abilities in a fast-paced clinical environment. Relevant nursing qualification (e.g., Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Nursing) and current professional registration with the appropriate regulatory body. Prior experience in a senior nursing or ward management role; experience in a general hospital setting is highly beneficial. Ability to work on-site full-time, adapt to shift-based work when required, and maintain professionalism under pressure.
