Executive Leadership Opportunity | East Africa PLEASE NOTE: Both expatriate and suitably qualified local candidates will be considered. A leading independent power producer is seeking an accomplished executive to lead the operation and long-term performance of one of East Africa’s most strategically important utility-scale power generation assets. This is a rare opportunity to take full executive responsibility for a nationally significant generation business, leading a high-performing management team while working closely with shareholders, regulators, government stakeholders, lenders, and strategic partners. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in ensuring operational excellence, commercial performance, and sustainable long-term growth. THE OPPORTUNITY: Reporting directly to the Board, the General Manager will provide strategic and operational leadership across all aspects of the business. This executive appointment requires an experienced leader capable of balancing world-class operational performance with strong commercial acumen, governance, and stakeholder engagement. This role is ideally suited to an executive who has successfully led large-scale power generation assets within Africa or other emerging markets and is comfortable operating in complex, multi-stakeholder environments. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Executive Leadership Provide strategic leadership and overall direction for the business. Lead and develop the executive and senior management teams. Drive a culture of operational excellence, safety, accountability, and continuous improvement. Deliver long-term business performance aligned with shareholder objectives. Operations & Asset Management Provide executive oversight of operations, maintenance, engineering, and asset management functions. Ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of a utility-scale power generation facility. Oversee major maintenance programmes, capital projects, asset integrity, and operational performance. Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on reliability, availability, and efficiency. Commercial & Financial Management Lead budgeting, financial planning, and business performance management. Oversee operational and capital expenditure while ensuring sound financial governance. Support commercial negotiations and strategic business initiatives. Manage business risks while delivering sustainable long-term value. Stakeholder & Government Relations Build and maintain trusted relationships with government authorities, regulators, utilities, financiers, shareholders, and key external stakeholders. Represent the organisation at executive and industry level. Navigate complex regulatory, commercial, and stakeholder environments with professionalism and credibility. Protect and enhance the organisation’s reputation across the region. Governance, Risk & Compliance Ensure the highest standards of corporate governance, ethics, and compliance. Champion Health, Safety, Environmental, and ESG performance. Maintain effective enterprise risk management and regulatory compliance frameworks. Support Board reporting, strategic planning, and business governance activities. ABOUT YOU: Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent). Postgraduate qualification in Business or Management would be advantageous. Extensive executive leadership experience within the power generation sector. Demonstrated success leading large, multidisciplinary technical and operational teams. Strong understanding of utility-scale generation assets and asset management. Proven experience engaging with Boards, shareholders, regulators, government agencies, and executive stakeholders. Strong commercial, financial, and strategic leadership capability. Exceptional communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
