The Role.
The Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) Foreman – Operations leads the safe, compliant, and efficient day-to-day operations of the KGM plant’s tailings facility. The role focuses on tailings deposition, water management, pipeline maintenance, and strict adherence to environmental and safety regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Tailings Deposition & Water Management: Supervise the operation of slurry pipelines, , return water pumps, and decant systems to ensure proper tailings beach management and water containment.
Facility Inspections: Conduct routine physical inspections of dam embankments, beaches, seepage controls, and pipeline conditions to monitor structural integrity and prevent leaks.
Safety & Compliance: Enforce rigorous HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) standards and ensure operations align with tailings management guidelines.
Team Leadership: Manage, mentor, and train TSF operators, including shift scheduling, task delegation, and performance tracking.
Maintenance Coordination: Coordinate with mechanical and maintenance teams to ensure equipment availability, handle breakdowns, and manage routine repairs.
Reporting: Document daily operational progress, complete safety checklists, and prepare reports for the Tailings or Plant Superintendent.

Operate the TSF as per design intent.
Implement the Operation Maintenance and Surveillance Manual (OMSM).
Productivity
Plan and organize work
Develop and implement weekly deposition plan to achieve smooth deposition, design beach slope and maintain minimum vertical freeboard required.
Oversee all daily operations of the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) in accordance with the current disposal plan.
Maintain direct operational liaison with the Process team to ensure the continuous flow of tailings from the plant to the TSF.
Coordinate the activities of the TFOs and pump/valve operators in the field, ensuring continuous shift coverage.
Supervise the opening and closing of spigots according to the deposition plan and the location of the supernatant pond.
Coordinate with the Process team the start-up, shutdown, and flow adjustments of the tailings and decant return pumps.
Perform basic maintenance and immediately report any malfunctions on the spigots, valves, and piping.
Ensure that all spigot operations are logged and communicated to the incoming shift during shift changes.
Monitor daily the location, size, and level of the supernatant pond and immediately report any deviation from the defined operational thresholds.
Adjust the position of the decant floating pump according to the pond’s movement.
Ensure a minimum safety distance between the pond and the embankments, in accordance with TSF procedures.
Regularly check the quality of the return water (clarity, turbidity) before it is returned to the process circuit.
Track the volumes of water pumped (return from supernatant pond, raw water) and ensure consistency with the TSF water balance.
Collaborate with the laboratory and the process team for the periodic quality control of the return water and tailings.

About You
Qualifications
Education
Diploma or Certificate in Civil Engineering, Mining, or a related technical discipline
Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination
Experience
3–5 years of direct operational and maintenance experience in mining environments, specifically in TSF management or large-scale processing plants
Knowledge
MRM principles, systems, technologies, and trends

Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, site layouts, and TSF design documentation
Written and spoken English and Amharic
